Toxic Tourism or Sustainable Travel? Vanessa Keith’s Keynote at A/D/O, Recap!

November 1, 2018

Thanks to Nelly Ben Hayoun Studios and the wonderful people at A/D/O for organizing such a wonderful event! It combined a short keynote on sustainable travel followed by an insightful discussion with moderator Nelly Ben Hayoun and fellow panelists David Charles of Impact Travel Alliance, writer Allison C. Meier and Paige West, Claire Tow Professor of Anthropology at Barnard College. Ideas continued to flow during an out-of-the-box-thinking activity that engaged audience participation in coming up with new and innovative approaches to sustainable travel! (Hint: the prize winning concept invoked the future of space travel!)

The event asked the fundamental question: Can we enjoy travel and leisure without harming the environment? During this month’s Design and Research Seminar at A/D/O, we investigated travel as one of our essential human needs. Together with a team of experts in the fields of architecture, anthropology, and sustainability, attendees reassessed today’s notions of tourism and leisure in order to speculate on the future of travel and our travel footprint. Here are some pictures from the event!
